Communicate effectively
- Approach writing as a recursive process
- Develop and support claims about literary texts
- Articulate claims in conceptually coherent essays
- Use conventions of standard written English
- Present research findings orally within the conventions of the discipline
I would translate this LO as the ability to understand and incorporate a variety or sources and standard techniques of writing in order to create cohesive essays/writing. Also, the element of being able to present written work in oral manner. The first assignment I believe fits the expectation above is the third essay from my ENG-110:English Composition course. Additionally, the second assignment I have identified is the midterm essay for ENG-135: Dog Stories.
Addressing the first assignment, I believe this essay effectively uses the required textual sources along with lived experience to scaffold a claim coherently throughout the essay. Relating this point to using conventions I also use structures such as Barclays and Naysayers to make my argument more clear and directly correlated to its larger themes/ideas. Lastly, the drafting process was continous including peer review and individual review from the professor. Ultimately, the essay was developed in over two versions before the final product. The only bullet point not represented in my selection is the presentation of argument orally as there was not one required.
The dog stories essay follows many of the same claims I made for the first assignment, but my language choices and grammar were shaped in this essay. I believe these improvements come from repeated essay writing and dedication to the process of writing itself. The more you practice the act of writing the easier it becomes to produce. An interesting claim is also made in the essay and reputably backed up by sources from the course. Fitting the last point, I had to summarze and present my findings in class.
