For Journal #3: Return to the in-class work we did in week 2 and expand as needed or as would be interesting. An additional project to come to terms with perhaps? Look back over your past humanities courses (see that list from week 1-2) and assignments and identify at least one each of the following:
- most memorable work(s) you encountered,
- One of the most memorable projects that I have encountered at UNE so far has been the Blog Proj that I did for Introduction to Journalism my sophomore year. I find this one to be memorable because of the amount of time I invested into doing it and the enjoyment I had presenting my findings at the end. To describe what I did then, it was basically a weekly journal that examined what college newspapers report on and how. Every student got to choose one paper to follow for the entire course of the semester, mine being the UVM Cynic. I see this as an option because I’m curious about how Maine-based student newspapers report on the same events or general news in the state. Looking back on it as well, I felt like my product was much more loose and didn’t have a streamlined theme going through it. Hence why my ideas for revision would be to choose not only a slew of papers, but a specific focus within that.
- questions you still think about,
- A project that left me with lingering questions would be the Media & Me project I completed for Mass Communications my junior year. The idea of the project was to report out what our experiences with different forms of communication has been throughout the years. After completing this, it left me wondering about how communication and the channels we use for it change and develop our identities. It was something that wasn’t very touched on in the project because it’s purpose was more of an info-dump or even “get to know me” assignment. If I were to select this, I think I would do more of a research angle with a narrative component that examines my life with channels of communication and how that’s impacted me in a broader sense.
- a sample of your work you’re most proud of
- A project I am really proud of has been the chapbook I made in my Poetry course this past fall. For the project, we were tasked with creating a themed or concept-based chapbook that would hold at least one poem we wrote over the semester. Elements of the chapbook to think about were how design, size, materials, and font interplay with the poems. Developing my chapbook, I felt really proud of the work I did because I thought my poems intertwined well with the book I made. Reflecting back on my work now I think this is another good contender for extension or revision. What I would with this is to make either a longer version of my chapbook with more poems, or instead of a chapbook, make either a sculpture or other display that would enclose the poems. Where I made a small mural in my chapbook, possibly doing a much larger one that included the poem with it.
- A sample of your work you wish you could do over (or know you would do differently)
- One project I know I would do differently and put more detail into it was my podcast story project I made my sophomore year in LIL120. The idea of the project was to make weekly entries on life at UNE and how you interacted with the community. By the end, it was expected to compile all these podcasts into a storyline that told the story of your experience. Reflecting back on this, I wish I had put more effort into the individual entries and the project overall. I felt like I did more of a rushed job and the end product didn’t feel whole or really told a developed story. If I choose this to move forward with, I think it would be really interesting to create a senior-year themed podcast that reflects on my experiences then versus now. Possibly even blending in some of my older entries.
Write a post that describes what you did then and what you notice about that work now. You’ll draw from this initial “inventory” (to anticipate a term from Newstok) when you select a revision project.
