This is a lesson I an planning to teach this Thursday and Friday at our poetry residency in York. Our focus for session 4 is figurative language and how it effects us as readers. I’ve noticed a lot of doodlers in the classes I work with so this activity feeds their interest while also staying on track with our curriculum.
This piece of erasure poetry comes from the after-school program I facilitate on Mondays alongside one of the teaching artists, Jack! I created this example before students arrived to see how erasure works and how adaptable it is to one’s interests.
This piece of evidence comes from the second poetry session I had last Tuesday at York High School. The idea of this activity was to have students write a love letter (or prose) to an inanimate object. Afterward, the students worked with lineation to make it into a poem. The photo above is the start of my own prose.
