Write a brief description of the kind of work you enjoy doing and/or think you’re well equipped to do. In general, you want to think about the nature of the work, its specific responsibilities, the environment you’d work in, who you’d work with, and your qualifications and temperament/disposition
I really enjoy doing any kind of work that allows itself to be collaborative, creative, and provides a positive outcome for all parties involved. In my educational experience, I have found one example of this to be long-term projects or individual writing pieces (any genre/kind) that are evolved through workshopping and peer evaluation. I fully believe that sharing knowledge and ideas leads to the best results while also being extremely fulfilling. I also enjoy work that allows me to teach others the ideas or knowledge I’ve gathered through experience and/or research. Anything that is able to inform or educate others in a way that is personally or professionally uplifting/helpful/insightful. Some of the responsibilities that come with this, I believe, is to be organized, leader-oriented, and able to deliver when something is expected to be done. This all leads me to say that I believe I would thrive in an educational role of some manner. I don’t think this would be the typical situation of being a teacher or tutor. It could possibly evolve into me working in nonprofit organizations as an administrative role, or be out in the world running programs and completing other actions a nonprofit employee would do. I find myself to be well-equipped for this kind of work due to years of experience in leadership positions through clubs or work. Educationally, I have worked with children in multiple different areas (summer camps, in-school programs, and after-school programs) which provides me the patience and overall temperament for that environment.
- What kind of job is this, or what is the main purpose of this job?
- A job in the world of nonprofit organizations would be a job for the humanities. It bridges together the human experience and the idea of shared knowledge. The main purpose of these “kinds” of jobs is completing tasks and working with others for the benefit of one part of society (that could be anything from homelessness to animal shelters to wildlife conservation). For me, personally, I think I would choose something that works with literacy and writing for young children and young adults.
- What kind of tasks would you perform?
- The list of tasks would depend on the position but it could include grant writing, administrative tasks such as emails, marketing, networking, and planning events, and community engagement through events or programs.
- Which of your skills, training, or experiences would this job call on? What did your analysis of past projects reveal (or remind you) about your skills?
- It would call on my organizational skills, time management, writing, communication both interpersonally and professionally, and leadership. The past projects that I looked at pointed out to me that my organizational skills have improved a lot from the way I would lay out my projects for presentation. Also, through some of the videos I had to make, that my public speaking has improved. I know to rehearse more, prepare notes, and be more confident in the words I choose to say. Lastly, that I have led many of the group projects I’ve down. Whether that be creating/developing the main ideas or leading the presentation/video portion with speaking.
- How might you explain how your undergraduate study (including your humanities degree) has prepared you for it?
- My humanities degree has allowed me to explore and hone my skills through various disciplines and projects. It challenged the way I take on tasks and how sometimes, change is necessary for completion and success. Overall, the foundational skills that I’ve have learned, like ones listed above, are moldable and transferrable across jobs.
