Journal #3

I really enjoyed this chapter because it focused on something I consider a struggle of mine in poetry. It discussed the idea of the image and its interplay with meaning when correctly utilized through writing. Imagery is something that has been instilled in me since childhood, being one of the first literary techniques talked about in high school composition. Although, in its elementary form we mostly looked at novels or stories, not often poetry. I have also been an avid reader and writer throughout my life, so I know where to use imagery. I think my struggle may be more because poetry is a new writing style for myself. Trying to get into the poet’s mind on what sounds good but also serves a purpose. It is one thing to use all the flowery language, but another to have it mean something.

Another part of this chapter I enjoyed was the memories it evoked when discussing our personal experiences with imagery. It made me think of my own, especially with sound. I have many songs that can transport me back to childhood memories instantly. One example that gets me every time is “Playing in the Band” by Grateful Dead. I can instantly see myself in my childhood kitchen dancing and singing with my little sister. My dad cooking dinner in the background and it being summer time. A fond memory I may consider for future poems.
