Change the drinking age to 18

The first story I read for this week was an opinion piece on how the legal drinking age should be lowered back down to 18 instead of the current requirement of 21. I found this argument to be interesting and thought provoking. It made me think about the real affects underage drinking has on the individual. It went deeper than the classic “if you ban something they’ll do it more”. It brought in a real argument on how underage drinking can create misuse and long term substance issues. It also struck a cord with me, being a child of a parent who suffered from alcohol abuse. I myself don’t drink because of this but see the affects it can have on others; and I wonder if this change would do something. I think it would need reservations such as safe drinking awareness and education.

Vermont’s THC market set to open May 1

The second story I read for this week regarded the legalization of cannabis for recreational and medical sale in Vermont. It creates a trend with the story last week on cannabis use within UVM campus. I think the topic itself is relevant and beneficial to young people today. It also makes me wonder the liberal bias that the Cynic may have in general in regard to story options. I thought in terms of connecting and outsourcing to the community instead of just campus was done very creatively. The inclusion of issues surrounding cannabis history use was vital and important to include so it does not disregard larger issues. Overall, super interested and excited to see how it develops more.
