Journal #16 (Editorial Reflection)

I found workshop to be very helpful today all around. We had stories that all were very fleshed out already, some needing to cut down, and I overall saw it to be beneficial for those being edited. Overall, one of the greatest compliments of the day that has stuck with me is the use of small works such as “smiled” or “laughed” in the inclusion of a quote. It brings so much life to the interviewee you are writing about and I truly enjoy finding those in writing. I thought another great suggestion that was made during the workshop was the importance of “the line” when it comes to an angle. Profiles must be sharp in the aspect that it reveals who someone is but also reveals their greater purpose in a way. That greater purpose can pertain to the writers purpose of the story. I also find that my peers are doing a great job when it comes to small editing suggestions also such as grammatical errors and sentence structure. These aspects are just as important when it comes to workshop because sometimes a writer has read their piece so many times, the minute details become glossed over. I think our workshops have great energy as a whole and I find all my fellow peers in the room to be helpful and respectful.
