The first article that I read pertains to the media policies for student athlete interviews on campus. It pertained specifically to the situations surrounding sexual assault on campus; student athletes being the offenders. It was brought to higher attention with the announcement of UVM’s men’s basketball coach receiving the coach of the year award. There have been multiple students who have come forward in the past academic year with cases against members of the men’s basketball team. Therefore, this article examines the interview policies surrounding student athletes and how interviews are run when it involves an athlete subject. The policies are very different, including that athletes are approved to be interviewed and then prepped for said interview. In turn, this has now created issues of interviews being denied when pertaining to certain athletes/subjects and a polished version of gathered information.

The second article that I read for this weeks update is surrounding the mask mandates lift on UVMS campus, and how community members feel about it. Overall, this was a well organized piece that displayed both sides of the argument surrounding the method UVM administration and health department used to lift masks. The general emotion I gathered from this article was that although this mask mandate is a good thing, there is a large social responsibility factor left over. There are students on campus who themselves may be immunocompromised or live with a family member who is. Also, UVM made the choice to lift masks in return time from their spring break. This situation has had an overall perspective that UVM should have staged lifting masks for a longer period of time to allow the chance of contracting Covid to go down. It provided a good use of community opinion and I believe it could be taken even further in future stories.
