One topic I think that we should discuss from the chapter in class is the idea of narrative writing. I think many people when thinking of news journalism do not consider how the writer is compiling the story of both literary elements and information. They make style and diction choices just like a fiction writer would do. They also use the same descriptive and figurative language to convey a story. Although the purpose may be different the idea of building a story is similar. A narrative piece is supposed to paint the picture of an event for the audience without having to be there. That means being able to set the stage while also providing adequate information.
In my own experience of writing narratives, I have always had to start off with a description of the basic 5 W’s that is discussed in the chapter. The who, what, when, why, and where. These are considered the building blocks to any basic news piece or fiction story. In writing a narrative, you then take this 5 W’s and fill them with the received information.
