Journal #6

I found the lede of this story to be a little vague in answering the questions we examined, but it fits for what the story is about. Since it is an ongoing piece, the missing elements of specific event is not critical. Instead, the author elaborates on multiple events that have happened that correlate with the lead throughout the piece. The lede itself though is still able to tell me who is involved and what is going on.

The angle of the piece is done well and it encapsulates what the author is trying to say. There is a slight bias almost with how positive and upbeat the tone is because it clearly shows the author is in favor of what is being discussed. Besides that, she is able to deliver a story that includes enough details and attributions that it fits her angle. There isn’t any contradicting points or quotes that would muddle with the angle.

This interview did a very well job with collecting quotes. She pulls out quotes from staff, alumni, parents, etc. It feeds into her angle a little bit too because those she chose to quote support this. The quotes themselves were able to do this because it follows the originally stated lede and elaborates on details that Seipel could not give herself.

Her use of quotes was sprinkled throughout the piece in a very well done method. She went back and forth between description of what was going on and a quote to verify. This is very important because it demonstrates how Seipel is making points that are validated by the quote. There’s no room for questioning her credibility because of the amount of attribution she uses.

The context is done well but there are some holes where I am still confused. I believed this largely because I’m not familiar with the topic myself or Santa Clara University, but she is able to provide me with some context. I am able to at least understand the point of the story and follow it despite some gaps. There is also the idea that I may not be the particular target audience for this piece.

Storytelling aspects in this piece were very good. It is moving through time effortlessly with transitions. I feel that is the highlight of this piece, she is able to encapsulate so much information into an 1000 words or less piece. Someone like me who is completely unfamiliar with the topic was able to grasp an understanding because of her story telling abilities. I find that her diction and straightforward word choice was also effective in her storytelling.
