A concept I found so interesting in this chapter is the reinforced ideas we have about different job careers. They become reinforced by the media we are fed growing up, that being things such as books, movies, the news, etc. Some jobs that, realistically, I know nothing about but have some reinforced notions about would be like being a Marine, a fire fighter, a osteopathic doctor, etc. The biggest thing that reinforces these ideas is the amount of TV shows about different areas of work. Take a show like grey anatomy, do you think you know how to be a doctor based on watching that? Or what the daily experiences of a doctor are? No, but you have preconceived notions on what it’s like to be a doctor. You see on Greys doctors in intense ER situations, on top of a bunch of social and romantic drama. Although most people know that the dramatization of the show isn’t realistic, people still take away some ideas of what they think a doctor is like. It’s fascinating to me that with the amount of job careers I think I know a lot about, but don’t really know much besides what I believe to be true. This can be an issue for things such students going down career paths to a job that “looks fun” based on media influence. Although I enjoy television media today about the different job careers, I also dually see it as a posing threat.
