What I find so interesting about this chapter, and communications in general, is the ability to apply communications anywhere. It surrounds everything we do in life without having to put thought to it. The two types of communication, interpersonal and communication through media both fascinate me. I mentioned the words ethos, pathos, and logos in my last journal and I want to continue that thought here. I never realized that learning those concepts in high school was essentially learning effective communication skills. All three concepts describe how to interact with the human psyche and communicate the message they are trying to send. The fact that company’s are able to do this without our knowledge (or us noticing the encouragement to buy) is so interesting. Large companies such as McDonald’s, Target, Walmart, etc. use advertising with bright colors and funny slogans to communicate. Whether the message be subtle or plastered across the advertisement, most Americans will listen to what said company is trying to communicate. The effect that media communication is able to have on our psyche is something I want to delve deeper into discussion with (whether it be in personal or class time).
